BUTLER COUNTY — A tragic accident in Butler County has left one person dead and two others injured, with the driver responsible now facing serious felony charges.
In the early hours of June 8, Butler County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a devastating two-vehicle head-on collision on US 127 south of Harris Road in Milford Township.
According to reports, a Toyota Camry traveling southbound on 127 veered into oncoming traffic, striking another vehicle head-on.
The driver of the Toyota has been identified as 22-year-old Leodegario Cruz Ortiz from Mexico. Ortiz and his passenger sustained life-threatening injuries and were airlifted to UC hospital for treatment.
Tragically, the driver of the other vehicle, 40-year-old Christopher Vanzant from Fountain City, Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Following an investigation into the incident, authorities determined that Ortiz was travelling at speeds exceeding 80 mph and alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the collision.
It was also discovered that Ortiz did not possess a valid US Driver’s license at the time of the crash. He is currently receiving medical treatment and a warrant for Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, a first-degree felony, has been issued by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the devastating consequences that can result from reckless behaviour behind the wheel.
