June 15—AUBURN — A Lewiston man met a fatal end on a Russell Avenue rooftop early Saturday morning following a series of violent events that included breaking into a home, engaging in a physical altercation with a resident, setting fire to two homes, and exchanging gunfire with law enforcement officials.
Leein Amos Hinkley, 43, was shot dead after a confrontation with local and state police. Hinkley had been released on $1,500 bail just days before the incident, despite previous violent crime charges dating back to 2011 and May 2024.
Maine State Police and the Auburn Police Department held a joint press conference to shed light on the dramatic events that unfolded, leaving a trail of destruction and shock in the neighborhood.
Initial Break-In and Chaos Unfold
Auburn Police Deputy Chief Tim Cougle revealed that the incident began when dispatch received a frantic call at 12:57 a.m. from a woman at a residence on Russell Avenue reporting a break-in. The caller mentioned a struggle between her significant other and an intruder.

Upon locating the woman at a nearby residence on Russell Avenue, police discovered that her home was ablaze and heard cries for help from inside. It was then that the woman identified Hinkley as the assailant.

Hinkley opened fire at the responding officers and deputies, leading to a tense standoff that escalated when he set a second home on fire. He sought refuge in a neighbouring garage before fleeing once again.

State police Colonel William Ross confirmed that Hinkley took refuge on a rooftop at 33 Russell Ave., where he remained until a fatal confrontation with state police around 5:36 a.m.
