Accident – Death – Obituary News :

JERUSALEM (AP) — An explosion in southern Gaza has resulted in the tragic loss of eight Israeli soldiers, marking the deadliest attack on Israeli forces in recent months.

The incident, which occurred more than eight months into an ongoing conflict, is likely to intensify calls for a ceasefire by Israeli demonstrators. This comes amid growing discontent over exemptions from military service for young ultra-Orthodox men.

Israel initiated an air and ground offensive in Gaza following a cross-border attack by Hamas and other militants on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the abduction of 250 others. The offensive has claimed the lives of over 37,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities. The situation has led to a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with over 80% of the population displaced and facing food shortages due to restricted access and ongoing hostilities.

The explosion took place in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza identified as a stronghold for Hamas. Israeli forces have been engaged in operations in the city since early May, with no definitive timeline for conclusion.

“They knew they might have to sacrifice their lives, but they did so for the sake of our country. I commend them and offer my condolences to their families,” stated Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz in a social media post.

International Response

In January, 21 Israeli troops were killed in a single attack by Palestinian militants in Gaza. President Joe Biden recently introduced a new ceasefire proposal aimed at securing the release of approximately 120 hostages still held in Gaza, and bringing an end to the conflict. While the plan has garnered international support, both Israel and Hamas have expressed reservations.

The protracted conflict has divided public opinion in Israel, with numerous protests demanding the safe return of the hostages. The Israeli government has declared over 40 hostages held by Hamas as deceased, raising concerns over the fate of those still in captivity.

Political Developments

The recent explosion coincides with a contentious decision by Netanyahu’s coalition to extend exemptions from military conscription for ultra-Orthodox men. The move has sparked controversy at a time when the country is engaged in multiple fronts against militant groups.

Israel’s Supreme Court has previously ordered an end to government subsidies for ultra-Orthodox men exempt from military service. Despite this, Netanyahu’s administration, which includes influential ultra-Orthodox parties, has found ways to maintain financial support for religious institutions.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, the sole dissenting voice in the coalition, advocates for equal contributions from all sectors of society in the ongoing conflict. Any departure of ultra-Orthodox partners from the government could trigger new elections, adding to the political uncertainty.

Ceasefire Negotiations

Efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire between Israel and Hamas have been unsuccessful, with recent proposals facing challenges from both sides. Hamas continues to insist on a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza as part of any agreement, while Israel seeks to dismantle Hamas’ military capabilities.

The volatile situation has also spilled over into the West Bank, where clashes have erupted following the escalation of hostilities. In a recent incident, a 16-year-old Palestinian was fatally shot by Israeli forces during a counterterrorism operation near Nablus.
