VISALIA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A 31-year-old man, identified as Gerard Munoz from Fresno, has been arrested after allegedly trying to remove a defibrillator from the wall of the Visalia Convention Center. The incident took place at 2:14 p.m., when security reported Munoz attempting to tamper with the life-saving equipment.
After his failed attempt to remove the defibrillator, Munoz reportedly started removing his clothes and attempted to disrupt a beauty pageant that was taking place at the convention center at that time. Concerned for the safety of the attendees, security immediately evacuated the premises.
Upon the arrival of Visalia Police Department officers, Munoz barricaded himself in a bathroom within the convention center. Despite attempts to negotiate with him, Munoz refused to come out. Eventually, officers had to forcibly enter the bathroom and apprehend the suspect, who put up a struggle before being taken into custody.
Following the arrest, Munoz was taken to Kaweah Health for medical clearance. Once cleared, he will face charges including resisting arrest, vandalism, being under the influence of a controlled substance, and indecent exposure.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining public safety and the consequences of tampering with emergency equipment.
