SALISBURY — A dramatic incident unfolded as two suspects were taken into custody following an attempt to rob an armoured van driver, who became suspicious when he noticed them loitering nearby in counterfeit security attire.

Law enforcement officers hurried to the Five Below store on Tingle Drive around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday after receiving reports of two individuals acting suspiciously outside the establishment. The suspects were identified as wearing black hoodies bearing the word ‘security’, as per a statement from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the armoured van, meanwhile, had taken refuge inside the store, awaiting assistance from deputies.

Upon arrival, the first responding deputy observed the suspects hastily attempting to depart upon spotting his patrol vehicle. Despite the deputy’s efforts to intercept them, the pair swiftly made their escape in a gold-coloured Nissan Altima.

The China Grove Police Department later spotted the Altima and initiated a pursuit, which culminated in the suspects abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot in the 800 block of Mt. Oliver Road. Following a brief chase, two of the individuals, identified as 26-year-old Devonte Eugene Scott and 25-year-old Raymond James Tino, were apprehended in close proximity.

During the transportation of the suspects to the sheriff’s office, Tino purportedly caused damage to the interior of one of the police vehicles by striking its cage. Additionally, a .40-calibre Glock handgun was reportedly uncovered in the Altima during a subsequent search.

Tino has been charged with felony conspiracy to commit robbery with a firearm or other dangerous weapon, as well as misdemeanours including injury to personal property and resisting, obstructing, or delaying an officer. Scott, on the other hand, faces a felony charge of conspiracy to commit robbery with a firearm or other dangerous weapon.

Both individuals have been remanded to the Rowan County Detention Center without bond in accordance with the Pretrial Integrity Act, as outlined in the official statement.
