Chester Turner Charged with Murder in Utah Case

A notorious 14-time convicted murderer, currently on death row at San Quentin State Prison, has been charged with a new murder case in connection with the 1998 strangling death of a 22-year-old woman in Utah.

Chester Turner, known for his heinous crimes of killing and raping women across Los Angeles in the 1980s and 1990s, has been linked to the Utah killing through DNA testing, as revealed by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.

The tragic incident unfolded when three children discovered the lifeless body of a young woman with a scarf around her neck behind a business in the area of 165 East and 900 South in Salt Lake City on September 24, 1998.

An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was strangulation, with evidence indicating that she had also been sexually assaulted during the attack. The victim was later identified as Itisha Camp.

Investigators were able to match DNA samples found on Camp’s scarf to Chester Turner, who was on parole in 1998 for previous convictions related to auto theft and drug sales. Turner was in Utah at the time of Camp’s death, leading to his recent murder charge in connection with the 22-year-old’s slaying.

Speaking on the developments, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill expressed empathy for Camp’s family and loved ones, acknowledging the decades of uncertainty they endured. He praised the diligent efforts of Salt Lake City Police detectives in pursuing this cold case until the breakthrough that led to Turner’s charge.

If found guilty, this would mark Turner’s 15th murder conviction. All his previous 14 convictions stem from homicides in Los Angeles County, where he was found guilty of 10 murders in 2010 and four more in 2014.

Most of Turner’s victims, including Camp, were sex workers, highlighting the vulnerability of certain demographics to violent crimes. One of his victims was even six months pregnant at the time of her murder.

No specific court dates have been scheduled yet for Turner’s trial in the Utah case, but the legal proceedings are anticipated to follow due process.
