An Orlando man, identified as 21-year-old Brian Lawrence Burks, was arrested for assaulting a Publix employee after being told he and his friend could not solicit on the property. The incident took place at Publix at Shoppes of Lake Village around 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
Police Response and Arrest
Upon receiving a description of the suspects and their vehicle, an officer spotted a car matching the description driving westbound on U.S. Hwy. 441. The officer followed the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, leading to the arrest of Burks. Despite initially refusing to identify himself, Burks was eventually taken into custody after providing false information to the officers.
Incident at Publix
Witnesses at the scene reported that Burks and his companion were soliciting customers for a basketball tournament on the Publix-owned sidewalk. When asked to leave by a Publix employee, Burks became aggressive and assaulted the employee by striking him in the throat. The victim and a witness called 911, and another customer informed them that Burks and his friend had fled the scene in a vehicle as described.
Evidence and Identification
Further investigation revealed that Burks had a history of soliciting for a basketball fundraiser in Lake Wales. A photo identification process confirmed Burks as the suspect in the assault. Surveillance footage also showed Burks wearing clothing matching the description provided by witnesses at Publix.
Arrest and Charges
Burks was arrested on charges of simple battery and resisting arrest without violence. He was taken to Lake County Jail and later released on $2,000 bond. The incident serves as a reminder of the consequences of aggressive behaviour towards employees and the importance of following property rules and regulations.
