In a devastating incident on February 23, a 75-year-old woman, identified as Bonny J. Heyn of Portland, lost her life after being struck by a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Maria I. Moncada. The accident occurred on Northeast Marine Drive near the Portland International Airport (PDX), where Moncada was reportedly driving at a high rate of speed.
According to police reports, Moncada veered out of her lane and crashed into the back of a 2015 Fit that was stationary on the shoulder of the road. Tragically, Heyn succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the accident. The authorities have notified Heyn’s family of her untimely passing.
Following the incident, Moncada was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. However, she now faces serious charges, including first-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol, and reckless driving. This tragic event marks the 13th traffic-related fatality in Portland in 2024, as reported by the Portland Police Bureau.
It is important to note that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s count of traffic-related fatalities may differ from the local count, as it excludes certain types of incidents. These exclusions consist of crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles, medical events, and deaths occurring more than 30 days after a crash.
