Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A mountain lion was discovered deceased on Saturday morning on the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills, not far from a wildlife crossing that is currently under construction to help reduce the number of cougar fatalities in the area.

The body of the puma was found around 5 a.m. in the far right lane of the freeway near Liberty Canyon Road, as reported by the California Highway Patrol. Troopers swiftly moved the cougar to the shoulder of the highway and sought assistance from California Fish and Wildlife. It was confirmed on Saturday morning that the agency had collected the mountain lion’s body for DNA analysis.

The cougar, which did not have a monitoring collar, met its demise in close proximity to the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, a $30 million passageway that spans over the bustling 10-lane freeway, according to Beth Pratt, the regional executive director of the National Wildlife Federation. She mentioned that the mountain lion likely succumbed to being struck by a vehicle, as there was evidence of fresh blood on the freeway. The specifics of the mountain lion, such as its age and sex, are still unknown at this time.

Construction of Wildlife Crossing

The construction of the wildlife passage commenced in 2022 and is scheduled for completion in 2026. This wildlife crossing is recognised as the largest of its kind globally, as mentioned by Pratt. It is situated in a crucial area where mountain lions frequently attempt to cross the freeway.

There have already been observations of other animals utilising the crossing, and by the end of the year, authorities aim to start adding soil and plants to the passage to seamlessly blend it into the environment and provide a secure space for the wildlife, Pratt explained.

Previous Mountain Lion Fatalities

In earlier incidents, Uno, a female mountain lion known for patrolling the mountains in Orange County, met her demise after being hit by a vehicle near Santiago Canyon Road in January. The cougar, identified as F312, had been tagged by researchers in 2021 when she was approximately 2 years old.

In January 2023, mountain lion P-81 was struck and killed on Pacific Coast Highway, likely by a vehicle, as announced by the National Park Service. The remains of the 4-year-old male cougar were recovered on PCH near Las Posas Road in Ventura County.

Moreover, in July 2022, mountain lion P-89, a 2-year-old male, was fatally struck by a car on the 101 Freeway in Woodland Hills. This incident occurred about a month following the tragic death of a 5-year-old female mountain lion who was also hit by a vehicle in the Santa Monica Mountains.
