LAUREL, Del. – A 17-year-old boy has been taken into custody by the Laurel Police Department after he was discovered with illegal substances and a weapon following a pursuit in Laurel.

The incident unfolded at approximately 12:20 p.m. on Thursday when an officer was conducting patrols near the First Stop Gas Station on West Street in Laurel.

During the patrol, the officer observed three young males walking on West Street, with one of them appearing to hide a weapon in his waistband.

Upon attempting to stop them, two of the individuals fled eastbound on 6th Street, while the third, suspected of concealing a weapon, ran southbound on West Street.

Law enforcement officers instructed the third juvenile to halt, and after multiple commands, he complied and was detained. A search revealed a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun concealed in his waistband, along with crack cocaine and Xanax pills without a prescription.

The 17-year-old, identified as a male from Salisbury, was arrested and charged with Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (Class D Felony), Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person (Class D Felony), Possession of Ammunition by a Prohibited Person (Class D Felony), and Possession of Controlled Substances x2 (Class B Misdemeanor).

Furthermore, it was discovered that he had an outstanding warrant from the Sussex County Family Court for Failure to Appear in connection to a resisting arrest case from February 2024. He was arraigned and remanded to the Stevenson House Juvenile Detention Center on a $7,900 secured bail.

The investigation into this matter is ongoing.
