The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office has announced that Theobald “Theo” Lengyel, accused of killing his girlfriend Alice “Alyx” Herrmann from Capitola in December 2023, will face trial for her murder. Lengyel was also charged with felony burglary and auto theft in connection with the case.

Case Background

Lengyel had previously pleaded not guilty to all charges. Herrmann, 61, was last seen at a rowing event in Santa Cruz on December 3. The following day, she logged online for work remotely, according to the Capitola Police Department. The investigation began on December 12, with authorities quickly deeming the disappearance as suspicious.

Her car was discovered in front of Lengyel’s residence in El Cerrito, as confirmed by El Cerrito Police. Despite Herrmann’s brother stating that he was not close to Lengyel, it was revealed that the couple had been in a long-term relationship.

Discovery of Body

Herrmann’s body was found in a wooded area within Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley. The remains were positively identified as Herrmann, bringing closure to the investigation. Lengyel is set to be arraigned on June 26.
