Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Terrence Shannon Jr., a former standout player for the University of Illinois basketball team and a potential first-round NBA draft pick, was acquitted of a rape charge by a jury in Douglas County, Kansas. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before reaching the verdict.

The 23-year-old Shannon was accused of committing sexual assault during a visit to Kansas for a football game between Illinois and the University of Kansas. He faced charges of rape or an alternative count of sexual battery, which led to his suspension from the team for six games. However, a federal judge later reinstated him, ruling that his civil rights had been violated.

Details of the Case

During the trial, Shannon testified that he had been at a bar with two roommates and some Kansas players on September 8, 2023. He claimed to have only consumed a few drinks and stated that he remembered everything that occurred that night. Shannon expressed that he was unaware of the rape allegation until several weeks later and insisted that he had never seen the 18-year-old accuser prior to the case.

The accuser reported to the police that a man, later identified as Shannon, had touched her inappropriately at the bar by grabbing her buttocks and reaching under her skirt. She claimed that the crowded nature of the bar prevented her from moving away from him.

Legal Defence

Shannon’s legal team labelled the accusations as baseless and raised doubts about the accuser’s motives. They also criticised the prosecutors in Douglas County for a lack of evidence and questioned the thoroughness of the investigation conducted by a Lawrence detective.

Throughout the trial, many NBA scouts closely monitored the case as Shannon’s draft prospects hung in the balance. The NBA draft is scheduled to take place on June 26-27.

Basketball Career

Standing at 6 feet 6 inches, Shannon is a versatile player who can operate as both a point guard and a shooting guard. He showcased his skills over five seasons at Illinois, with his standout performance coming in his final season. Shannon averaged an impressive 23 points per game for a team that reached the Elite Eight before falling to eventual national champions, UConn.

Shannon’s stellar performance on the court earned him first-team All-Big Ten honours and a third-team All-American selection by The Associated Press.
