LAWRENCE (AP) — Terrence Shannon Jr., a former standout player for the University of Illinois and a highly touted prospect in the upcoming NBA draft, was acquitted of rape charges by a jury in Douglas County, Kansas. The verdict came after less than two hours of deliberation.

Shannon, 23, had been accused of sexual assault during a visit to Kansas for a football game between Illinois and the Jayhawks last September. He faced charges of rape and sexual battery, which resulted in a suspension from the team for six games. However, a federal judge later reinstated him, citing violations of his civil rights.

During the trial, Shannon testified that he was at a bar with roommates and Kansas players on the night in question, where he consumed only a few drinks and recalled all events clearly. He claimed that he was unaware of the rape allegation until weeks later and had never seen the accuser prior to the case.

The woman who accused Shannon stated that he had touched her inappropriately at the crowded bar, but Shannon vehemently denied the allegations, citing his personal experiences with sexual assault and his respect for women.

Shannon’s legal team argued that the accusations were baseless and questioned the credibility of the prosecution’s case. They also criticised the lack of evidence presented by the Douglas County prosecutors and the thoroughness of the investigation conducted by a Lawrence detective.

The outcome of the trial was closely monitored by NBA scouts, as Shannon is considered a potential first-round draft pick. Standing at 6-foot-6, he is known for his versatility as a point guard and shooting guard, and his impressive performance during his time at Illinois.

Shannon excelled in his final season, averaging 23 points per game and leading his team to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament, where they were ultimately defeated by the eventual national champions, UConn. He was honoured with first-team All-Big Ten and third-team All-American selections by The Associated Press.

Following the verdict, Shannon expressed relief and gratitude for the support he received throughout the trial. He is now focused on preparing for the NBA draft, scheduled to take place on June 26-27.
