An 8-year-old girl from Missouri tragically passed away on a SkyWest flight to Chicago on Thursday after becoming “ill and unresponsive,” according to authorities.
The flight, which originated from Joplin, Missouri, was en route to Chicago but had to make an emergency landing in Peoria, Illinois, due to the child’s deteriorating health.
Upon landing in Peoria, the young girl, identified as Sydney Weston from Carl Junction, Missouri, was found to be not breathing and without a pulse, as reported by the Peoria County Coroner’s Office.
Emergency responders, including deputies and the Air National Guard, made efforts to revive the child, but she was unfortunately pronounced dead at a local hospital.

SkyWest Airlines confirmed in a statement to NBC News that the incident occurred on flight 5121, operating as United Express, from Joplin to Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The airline expressed gratitude to their crew members for their prompt response in assisting the passenger in distress and to the medical personnel who met the aircraft in Peoria.
The young girl’s autopsy is scheduled to take place on Friday to determine the cause of her sudden death, which occurred shortly after 8 a.m., according to the coroner’s office.
As of now, the family of Sydney Weston has not been reachable for comment on this tragic event.
