A search is underway in Houston for a prisoner who managed to escape during a court appearance while holding a district attorney’s office worker at knifepoint.

The incident took place near the courthouse, where the inmate was able to evade security, climb down a pipe, and threaten a female employee from the Harris County DA’s office with a knife before jumping into the Buffalo Bayou.

According to reports, the prisoner attempted to steal the woman’s car before fleeing into the water. Fortunately, the employee was unharmed during the ordeal.

Law enforcement authorities have not disclosed the name of the escaped prisoner, but Click2Houston has identified him as 35-year-old Nigel Sanders. The specific charges behind his court appearance remain undisclosed at this time.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Houston police, Harris County sheriff’s deputies, and Precinct 1 constables, are actively involved in the search for the fugitive. The constable’s office, responsible for courthouse security, is also assisting in the operation.

The incident prompted a lockdown at the University of Houston-Downtown campus, with officials urging students and staff to seek shelter indoors and secure all entry points.

Reports indicate that the escaped prisoner was dressed in orange jail-issued pants and a black shirt at the time of his escape.
