A tragic incident occurred at Colorado National Monument on Monday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 54-year-old woman while hiking the Lower Monument Canyon Trail.

Marsha Cook, a resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, collapsed and lost consciousness two miles up the trail around 2:27 p.m. Park rangers, Lower Valley Fire crew members, Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff, and Mesa County Search and Rescue team members all responded to the scene upon receiving the report.

Despite the efforts of family members and first responders who performed CPR on Cook, their attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The release issued by Colorado National Monument staff expressed their condolences to the hiker’s family and friends, while also extending gratitude to the various agencies and organisations that assisted in the response, including Lower Valley Fire, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Classic Air, the Mesa County Coroner’s Office, and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Victim Assistance Program.
