GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado (KCRG) – A Cedar Rapids woman tragically lost her life while hiking in the picturesque Colorado National Monument on Monday afternoon.

The unfortunate incident took place just before 2:30 p.m. at the stunning Colorado National Monument, located near Grand Junction, Colorado.

The deceased hiker has been identified as 54-year-old Marsha Cook, who hailed from Cedar Rapids. Reports indicate that Cook collapsed and lost consciousness while traversing the challenging Lower Monument Canyon Trail, two miles into her hike.

Despite the valiant efforts of first responders who administered life-saving measures, their attempts proved unsuccessful, and Cook sadly passed away at the scene.

The National Parks Service has issued a cautionary statement regarding hiking in hot weather conditions, emphasizing the potential risks of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. This advisory comes in light of the soaring daytime temperatures exceeding 90 degrees in Colorado National Monument over the past week.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office is currently conducting investigations to ascertain the precise cause of Marsha Cook’s untimely demise.
