A 58-year-old Arizona man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for planning a violent attack at a Bad Bunny concert in Atlanta. Mark Adams Prieto was charged with firearms trafficking, transfer of a firearm for use in a hate crime, and possession of an unregistered firearm following a lengthy investigation by the FBI. The motive behind Prieto’s plot was to incite a race war ahead of the upcoming presidential election in November, according to NBC News.
Investigation and Arrest
The Justice Department revealed that Prieto is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, awaiting transport from New Mexico to Arizona. The investigation into Prieto began in October after a confidential source informed the FBI about Prieto’s intentions to spark a race war. Over the course of three years, Prieto had expressed extremist views and made alarming statements advocating for a mass shooting targeting Black people, Jews, and Muslims.
Planning the Attack
Prieto, a vendor at gun shows, allegedly traded firearms in cash or swap deals to avoid detection by authorities. He believed that martial law would be imposed after the 2024 election and planned the attack to precede it. Prieto specifically targeted a Bad Bunny concert in Atlanta, aiming to leave confederate flags at the scene to incite fear and division.
Arrest and Confession
On May 14, Prieto was arrested in New Mexico and admitted to discussing the attack with an undercover agent. Despite claiming he had no intention of carrying out the attack, authorities found multiple firearms in his possession, including an unregistered short-barreled rifle. Each conviction for the charges against Prieto carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
Response from Bad Bunny
As of press time, a spokesperson for Bad Bunny had not responded to requests for comment on the incident. The artist, known for his activism and support of marginalized communities, has yet to address the foiled plot at his concert in Atlanta.
