An 18-year-old student pilot, identified as Jon Diego Monreal from Crowley, tragically lost his life in a small plane crash in Johnson County, Texas. The incident, which occurred near Godley, about nine miles northwest of the Cleburne Regional Airport, was reported shortly before 9 p.m. on May 15.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released a preliminary report shedding light on the events leading up to the fatal crash. According to the report, Monreal was flying a Cessna 150L when the plane crashed in an open pasture near Godley at around 8:30 p.m. on May 15. There were no passengers aboard the flight.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the plane appeared to be flying lower than usual and at a very slow speed before entering a spiraling nosedive. The aircraft completed several rotations in the descending spiral before crashing behind a hill. The witnesses immediately called 911 upon seeing smoke and fire emanating from the crash site.
Investigations by the NTSB revealed evidence of a post-impact fire that completely destroyed the cabin and cockpit of the aircraft. However, there was no indication of any pre-impact mechanical malfunction or failure that could have contributed to the crash.
