Dramatic video footage has emerged showing the harrowing moment an alleged drunken driver caused a Virginia State Trooper’s patrol vehicle to collide with her during a traffic stop in Fairfax County.
The dashboard camera video, released by Virginia State Police, captures the incident which took place in the early hours of Tuesday. Trooper C. Aziz can be seen engaging with a driver, suspected to be impaired, of a sedan that had recklessly parked in a travel lane.
The sedan was positioned in such a way that it straddled the line between two right lanes, causing a semi-truck to come to a halt in the right lane due to the sedan’s obstructive placement.
Suddenly, a Jeep careened into the semi-truck, causing the trailer to spin out of control and collide with the trooper’s vehicle. The impact sent the trooper crashing onto the pavement, but miraculously, she escaped without any broken bones.
Despite the terrifying ordeal, Aziz demonstrated tremendous resilience by promptly getting back on her feet and communicating via her radio.
While Aziz may have avoided serious physical injury, she still faces a challenging road to recovery, according to state police officials.
The driver of the Jeep, identified as 35-year-old Joanna Hatch, was promptly arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol following the incident.
Similarly, the sedan driver, identified as 43-year-old Erica Bernard, faced multiple charges including driving under the influence of drugs, obstruction of justice, possession of a Schedule 1 or 2 substance, refusal to undergo a breathalyzer or blood test, and improper stopping of a vehicle on a highway.
