The Atlanta Police Department has released the incident report from Tuesday’s tragic shooting at Peachtree Center mall, along with chilling 911 calls that captured the chaos.
According to authorities, the shooting took place at 235 Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta around 2:15 p.m. The bustling area is home to various businesses, restaurants, and hotels, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.
The incident unfolded in the food court of Peachtree Center mall following a heated altercation between two individuals, as reported by Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. The entire building was placed on lockdown as panic ensued.
Suspect identified as Jeremy Malone
The suspected shooter, identified as 34-year-old Jeremy Malone from Morrow, allegedly engaged in a physical altercation with a 47-year-old man in the food court before pulling out a gun and opening fire. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and Atlanta police confirmed that Malone then proceeded to shoot a 69-year-old woman from East Point and a 70-year-old woman from Atlanta.
An off-duty police officer, working a secondary job at the mall, bravely responded to the gunfire. The officer ordered Malone to drop the weapon, but when Malone refused, a brief exchange of gunfire occurred, resulting in the officer shooting Malone, as detailed in the incident report.
The three victims have been identified as Deborah Hardy, Donna Hardy, and Orlando Garcia, with Deborah Hardy sharing her harrowing experience after being discharged from the hospital.
Victim’s Account of the Tragedy
Deborah Hardy spoke to Atlanta News First and recounted the terrifying moments inside the food court. She and her sister Donna were focused on protecting their 3-year-old niece when the chaos erupted.
Despite sustaining a gunshot wound to her leg, Hardy remained resilient, stating, “I didn’t even realize I had been shot. We were just trying to get something to eat, and then they started shooting.”
Legal Ramifications for Malone
Jeremy Malone now faces a slew of charges, including aggravated assault, reckless conduct, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of certain felonies, and third-degree cruelty to children, according to records from the Fulton County Jail.
