Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A heartbreaking incident of water contamination at a temple fair in Tumakuru district, Karnataka, has resulted in the tragic loss of six lives, including a three-year-old child, and the hospitalisation of over 110 individuals. The contamination is believed to have been caused by the poor maintenance of an overhead tank.

The devastating events unfolded during the annual temple fair dedicated to deities Lakshmidevi and Kempannadevi, which commenced on June 9. By June 10, more than 50 attendees, including children, started experiencing severe diarrhoea. Among the first victims was 85-year-old Hanumakka. Tragically, the following day, two more elderly individuals, Nagamma (89) and Nagappa (85), also lost their lives to the illness. The youngest victim, three-year-old Meenakshi, daughter of Manjunath and Jayalakshmi, passed away at a private hospital in Madhugiri town on June 12, along with Chikkadasappa (76) and Peddanna (74).

Warning and Actions Taken

Dr Sreenivas, the Taluk health officer, revealed that laboratory tests on water samples from the overhead tank confirmed significant contamination. Residents were immediately advised not to use water from the tank, leading to the district administration shutting off the tap water supply to the village. As a precautionary measure, potable water is now being distributed through tankers, and all citizens are urged to boil water before consumption.

Responsibility and Consequences

The issue of water quality from the overhead tank has been a long-standing concern due to neglect and inadequate maintenance. Following this tragic incident, Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) BV Muniraju and waterman S Nagaraju were suspended on June 13 for failing in their duty.
