Rare Gold Signet Ring Belonging to Former UK Prime Minister Fetches £9,500 at Auction

A remarkable discovery by metal detectorist Tom Clark has led to the sale of a valuable piece of history – a gold signet ring that once belonged to former UK Prime Minister George Grenville. The treasure was unearthed in a field near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, where Clark was exploring with his metal detector.

George Grenville served as the UK Prime Minister between 1763 and 1765, making this ring a significant historical artefact. The ring was recently sold at Noonans Mayfair’s auction to an American buyer for a staggering £9,500.

When asked about the sale, Tom Clark, the lucky discoverer of the ring, expressed his excitement but also mentioned his wife’s plans for the money. He said, “I didn’t watch the sale as I was out metal-detecting. I would like to put the money in my bank account, but I am sure that my wife will have ideas of how to spend it!”

According to Nigel Mills, an expert in artefacts and coins at Noonans, the ring was passed down to George Grenville’s second son, also named George. This family connection adds an extra layer of historical significance to the ring.

George Grenville’s Legacy

George Grenville, in addition to his role as Prime Minister, was also a prominent member of Parliament and held the title of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was later honoured with the title of Marquess of Buckingham and lived near the location where the ring was discovered.

Half of the proceeds from the sale of the ring will be given to the landowner where the treasure was found, creating a fair and rewarding outcome for all involved.

Continuing Discoveries

This exciting find comes on the heels of another remarkable discovery in Cumbria last year, where Jacob Purdie unearthed jewellery over 400 years old in a field in Burton-in-Kendal. The treasure, including a filigree gold pin head and a rare gold hammered coin, is currently awaiting valuation after being ruled as treasure by the county’s coroner in December.

These discoveries serve as a reminder of the rich history and hidden treasures that lie beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered by dedicated explorers like Tom Clark and Jacob Purdie.
