Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Survivors of the tragic Grenfell Tower fire marked the seventh anniversary of the devastating blaze by speaking out about the ongoing lack of justice in the case. The fire, which took place on June 14, 2017, claimed the lives of 72 people and shook the nation to its core.

Edward Daffarn, a resident of the 16th floor of the tower, expressed his frustration at the lack of accountability in the case, stating, “It’s torturous, frustrating, and almost unbearable. It should be shocking for everyone, but for us, our lives are still on pause. There hasn’t been a single click of handcuffs on a single perpetrator of the Grenfell Tower fire. It’s impossible to move on from Grenfell, but we do need a resolution, and we need these criminal prosecutions.”

Last month, the Metropolitan Police announced that no charges would be brought until late 2026 at the earliest, delaying potential criminal trials by at least a decade. A total of 58 individuals and 19 companies have been identified as suspects who could face charges in connection with the fire.

The second stage report of the Grenfell Tower inquiry is set to be published on September 4, with Mr Daffarn hoping that it will “name and shame the corporates that basically perpetrated the death of 72 people.”

Mr Daffarn recounted the horror of the night of the fire, where he initially mistook the early morning alarm for someone burning toast. However, as black smoke filled his flat, he was urged by a friend to evacuate, ultimately saving his life.

He described the harrowing experience of trying to escape through the smoke-filled hallway, with the timely intervention of a firefighter being the difference between life and death. Two of his neighbours on the same floor, Joseph Daniels, 65, and Sheila, 84, tragically did not survive the blaze.

Grenfell United, a community-led group of survivors and bereaved, is calling for an independent body to ensure that inquiry recommendations are followed and for a ‘duty of candour’ to be placed on public officials to be transparent when giving evidence.

As the community reflects on the seventh anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, Mr Daffarn emphasised the importance of remembering the 72 lives lost and the ongoing unresolved issues surrounding the tragedy. He urged the public to keep the plight of Grenfell survivors and the quest for justice at the forefront of their minds.
