SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. – A man from Sacramento was apprehended on Thursday after deputies discovered more than two pounds of suspected methamphetamine during a routine traffic stop, according to a statement from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 3:50 p.m. on Thursday, members of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office AB109 compliance team conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle travelling northbound on Interstate 5 for a violation of the vehicle code.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 31-year-old Edgar Ivan Mares, as confirmed by the SCSO.

Mares allegedly ignored the siren and emergency lights of a marked patrol car and led deputies on a slow-speed chase for approximately two miles before pulling into the Anderson Factory Outlets parking lot.

SCSO K-9 Ace and his handler were deployed during the traffic stop, with K-9 Ace indicating the presence of a suspicious odour.

Following a search of Mares’ vehicle, law enforcement officers discovered around 2.04 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, along with approximately $900 in cash.

The Shasta Interagency Narcotics Task Force was called to the scene and assumed control of the investigation.

Mares was subsequently arrested on charges of possession and transportation of narcotics for sale, as well as misdemeanor evading. He was taken into custody and booked at the Shasta County Jail, with bail set at $100,000.
