A Lansdowne man, Clifford Pendleton, has been sentenced to 5 to 12 years in state prison after pleading guilty to stabbing his mother in the face with a knife during what appeared to be a mental health crisis. The incident occurred on May 31, 2023, leading to Pendleton’s arrest.
Details of the Crime
East Lansdowne police responded to a stabbing incident at an apartment on East Beverly Avenue. Upon arrival, they found Pendleton’s mother bleeding from her face, with a large amount of blood inside the apartment. She revealed that Pendleton had punched her and then stabbed her with a kitchen knife before fleeing in her Kia Sorento.
Police Chase and Crash
While officers were still at the crime scene, they spotted the stolen Kia and initiated a chase. Pendleton attempted to evade the police, disregarding stop signs, but ultimately crashed into a motorcyclist. The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Legal Proceedings
Pendleton, represented by his defence counsel Ian Pulz, entered negotiated guilty pleas to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault by vehicle. The charges were downgraded as part of the plea agreement. Common Pleas Court Judge Anthony Scanlon also ordered Pendleton to pay restitution to the motorcycle operator and serve one year of reentry probation.
Mental Health and Rehabilitation
Pulz mentioned that Pendleton has been dealing with mental health issues and had spent time at Norristown State Hospital. He is now receiving treatment and aims to complete his GED while in prison. Pendleton, who has three children, is hopeful about his rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
