C. Aziz : VSP Trooper Injured by Drunk Driver in Traffic Stop

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. – A Virginia State Police trooper, identified as C. Aziz, sustained injuries in the early hours of Tuesday after being hit by a suspected drunk driver on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County, just outside of Washington, D.C. According to a report by NBC 4, the incident occurred at 3 a.m. as Trooper Aziz was responding to a vehicle stopped on the interstate.

The trooper had approached a sedan that had stopped along the dotted lines between two right-hand travel lanes. Despite Aziz’s attempts to get the driver to move to a safer location, the vehicle remained stationary. Dash cam footage from the police car captured cars speeding by Aziz on the left, indicating the dangerous position of the stopped sedan. The speed limit on that stretch of I-495 is 65 miles per hour.

The situation took a drastic turn when a suspected drunk driver in a Jeep crashed into a tractor-trailer parked in front of the sedan. The impact caused the Jeep to spin and collide with Aziz’s patrol car, which was parked behind the sedan with its lights flashing. The force of the collision pushed Aziz forward, causing her injuries as she fell to the ground.

Fortunately, Aziz did not suffer any broken bones, but she faces a challenging road to recovery following the incident. The driver of the Jeep, Joanna Hatch, 35, from Alexandria, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Additionally, the driver of the sedan, Erica Bernard, 43, from Albright, West Virginia, was also arrested on multiple charges, including driving under the influence of drugs, possession of a controlled substance, and improper stopping on a highway.
