Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A man from Topeka, Kansas, has been handed a prison sentence of almost four years in connection with a tragic traffic incident that occurred on Christmas Day in 2022 in southeast Topeka. The individual, identified as Justice Robert Lane Cox, aged 24, received his sentencing on Thursday at the Shawnee County District Court.

According to officials, Cox has been ordered to serve a total of 46 months behind bars, with an additional 24 months of post-release supervision. This verdict follows a fatal crash that took place at approximately 2:15 a.m. on December 25, 2022, in the 100 block of S.E. 37th Street.

Reports indicate that Cox was driving a vehicle westbound on S.E. 37th Street when the car suddenly swerved off the road and collided with a utility pole. Tragically, one of the passengers in the vehicle, identified as Brett M. Joynt, aged 23 and also from Topeka, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Additionally, two other individuals in the vehicle required hospital treatment for their injuries.

Cox was taken into custody on May 2, 2023, and faced a slew of charges including first-degree murder, fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless driving, racing on highways, driving at an unsafe speed for conditions, and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Katie Garceran, a spokesperson for the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office, revealed that Cox’s sentencing on Thursday was carried out “following consultation and with the consent of the victim’s family.” Garceran explained that the District Attorney’s Office had negotiated a resolution to the matter, resulting in Cox’s sentencing breakdown as follows:

  • Count 1 – Involuntary manslaughter-commission of a crime, 32 months
  • Count 2 – Fleeing or attempting to elude police-felony, 7 months
  • Count 3 – Interference with a law enforcement officer-providing false information, 7 months
