Vadim V. Sashchenko : “43-Year-Old Man Fatally Shot by Vancouver Police Near Waterfront”

A 43-year-old man from Vancouver has been identified as the individual fatally shot by Vancouver police near the waterfront over the weekend. Vadim V. Sashchenko succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, according to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Following the incident, investigators have refrained from releasing any additional updates, including the identities of the officers involved in the shooting. Both officers have been placed on critical incident leave, a standard protocol in cases of police shootings.

The incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon when Vancouver police responded to a call in the 100 block of Southeast Columbia Way, just east of the Interstate 5 Bridge. The initial report indicated that a man was allowing his German shepherd dog to roam freely, with the dog having already bitten one person. The caller also mentioned that the man seemed to be in possession of a firearm.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered Sashchenko and his dog near Columbia Way and Columbia Street. As two officers approached him, Sashchenko allegedly brandished a firearm in their direction, prompting one of the officers to open fire, resulting in his death at the scene.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the dog, which exhibited aggressive behaviour following its owner’s demise, was secured to a large garbage bin. Emergency services attended to one individual who sustained bite wounds from the dog, and the animal was subsequently taken to the Humane Society for Southwest Washington.

The Southwest Washington Independent Investigation Response Team, spearheaded by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, has taken charge of the investigation into the shooting. Video footage captured by the officers’ body-worn cameras will be made available to the public at a later date.
