Accident – Death – Obituary News :

June 13—CUBA, N.M. — The Northern New Mexico village of Cuba and surrounding communities gathered for a poignant memorial as the sun set in a blaze of orange on Wednesday evening. The somber event brought together scores of mourners, spanning generations from newborns to the elderly, at the Immaculate Conception Church parking lot to honour the memory of 18-year-old Trent Greene from Lindrith.

Greene, a recent graduate of Cuba High School and a beloved student athlete, was tragically found shot to death off a rural road near Lindrith earlier this month. The community remains in shock as no suspects have been publicly identified in his killing.

At the memorial, attendees shared their cherished memories of Greene, with dozens of teens donning matching black T-shirts emblazoned with the number \”5,\” which Greene wore during his time on the Cuba High football team. The shirts also featured a photo of Greene in his graduation cap and gown.

Close friends Payton Binion and Liliana Maestas, both 18, fondly recalled their years-long friendship with Greene. The trio, along with a larger group of teens from villages such as Cuba, Regina, La Jara, and Lindrith, had bonded over their shared experiences in a youth basketball league.

Organisers Binion and Maestas arranged the vigil to provide solace and support to the grieving community and Greene’s family amidst the profound loss. The impact of Greene’s passing has reverberated throughout the region, leaving a deep sense of sorrow in its wake.

Remembered for his prowess in football, basketball, track, and cross-country, Greene was known for his love of fishing at Abiquiú Lake, where he would spend hours immersed in the quiet beauty of nature. His friends reminisced about his infectious laughter and willingness to go above and beyond to lift the spirits of those around him.

In the weeks following his untimely death, Maestas and Binion have found solace in fishing trips as they reflect on their shared memories of Greene. Described as a dependable individual with a strong work ethic, Greene would often assist with tasks at his family’s store, Regina Mercantile, and lend a helping hand to neighbours in need.

Binion shared that Greene had big dreams for his future, including continuing his football career, amassing wealth, travelling the globe, and owning a vintage 1968 Chevrolet Camaro. His exuberance and love for dancing left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

As darkness descended, over 250 attendees at the vigil held candles while Binion delivered a heartfelt eulogy for her friend. Projected photos and videos showcased Greene’s life milestones, from sporting events to graduation ceremonies, capturing the essence of his vibrant spirit.

Greene’s tragic death, classified as a homicide, remains under investigation by the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office. While no arrests have been made, search warrants have been executed for two vehicles, including one belonging to Greene.

The investigation is focused on events that transpired at the Lindrith rodeo grounds on June 1, the night before Greene’s body was discovered. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots, prompting authorities to interview individuals who were present at the scene.

This developing story continues to unfold, with updates expected as the investigation progresses. Stay tuned for more information on this tragic incident.
