(AP) – Former Illinois standout Terrence Shannon Jr., a potential first-round NBA draft pick, was found not guilty Thursday on a rape charge after a jury in Douglas County, Kansas, spent less than two hours deliberating the verdict.
The 23-year-old Shannon, who can play both point guard and shooting guard, was accused of committing sexual assault in September last year while visiting Kansas for a football game between the Illini and the Jayhawks. He was charged with rape or an alternative count of sexual battery, which led to a suspension for six games; however, a federal judge later reinstated him, ruling that his civil rights had been violated.
During the trial, Shannon testified that he was at a bar with two roommates and some Kansas players on the night in question, but he only had a few drinks and claimed to remember everything that happened. He stated that he was unaware of the rape allegation until several weeks later and denied ever seeing the 18-year-old woman who accused him before the case began.
The woman alleged that Shannon had grabbed her buttocks and reached under her skirt to touch her while they were at the crowded bar. Shannon vehemently denied these accusations, stating that he would never treat a woman in such a manner, especially considering the impact of a similar experience on someone close to him.
Shannon’s legal team described the allegations as a “blind accusation” and raised questions about the woman’s motives. They also criticised the prosecutors in Douglas County for the lack of evidence presented and questioned the thoroughness of the investigation conducted by the Lawrence detective assigned to the case.
Scouts monitoring Shannon’s case ahead of the NBA draft, scheduled for June 26-27, were relieved by the verdict. The 6-foot-6 player had a standout season with Illinois, averaging 23 points per game and earning first-team All-Big Ten and third-team All-American honours from The Associated Press.
