Accident – Death – Obituary News :

During the early hours of June 11, Officer B. Johnson of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department was stationed on the side of Highway 48 near Vepco Street. As part of his routine patrol, Officer Johnson noticed a vehicle travelling south from Gaston at a high rate of speed. Suspecting that the vehicle was exceeding the speed limit, Officer Johnson decided to pursue it.

After covering a considerable distance, Officer Johnson caught up to the vehicle near Third Street and Roanoke Avenue. He observed the vehicle swerving across the center line multiple times, prompting him to activate his emergency lights and siren. The vehicle was eventually pulled over just past Fifth Street on Roanoke Avenue.

Upon approaching the driver, identified as 33-year-old Shaniqua Trasha Jefferson from Rocky Mount, Officer Johnson detected signs of impairment. Jefferson displayed bloodshot eyes and emitted a strong odour of alcohol from within the vehicle. When questioned about her alcohol consumption, Jefferson admitted to having had some drinks but refused to undergo field sobriety testing.

Despite Jefferson’s refusal to take the test, Officer Johnson determined that she was under the influence based on her speech and behaviour. Jefferson was subsequently taken to the police department for further testing, where she registered a breath alcohol concentration of .13, nearly twice the legal limit. She was charged with driving while impaired, driving left of center, and speeding.

Following her arrest, Jefferson was released into the custody of a responsible individual and given a court date of July 26 to address the charges against her.
