LUCKNOW: A heartbreaking event unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday in Madheyganj area of Lucknow, as a 20-year-old auto-rickshaw driver lost his life while attempting to rescue a 15-year-old girl who had jumped into the Gomti River after a family dispute. The young girl was saved and is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital, while the brave driver, identified as Shadab from Niralanagar, tragically drowned in the river.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 3 am when the girl, a resident of Dubagga, leaped into the Gomti River from Pukka Pul following an argument at home. Shadab, who happened to be passing by, heard the commotion and immediately sprang into action. Despite his heroic efforts, he underestimated the depth of the water in the darkness of the night and unfortunately met his demise while trying to save the girl.
Upon receiving the first distress call at 3:08 am, the police swiftly responded and launched a rescue operation. Local divers were also summoned to assist in the rescue efforts. Within 20 minutes, the girl was successfully pulled out of the water and rushed to the hospital for further treatment. However, it took an additional hour of searching before Shadab’s lifeless body was recovered from the river.
Shadab’s brother-in-law, Shariq, revealed that Shadab was the sole provider for his family, consisting of his mother and four sisters, as their father had passed away earlier. The tragic incident has left the family devastated and in mourning.
Meanwhile, in another distressing incident in the region, a truck carrying sand overturned, resulting in the tragic deaths of several individuals. The victims, including children, were identified as Awadhesh alias Balla, his wife Sudha alias Mundi, their daughter Sunaina, sons Lalla and Buddhu, Hero, her husband Karan, and their daughter Komal alias Bihari. Only one girl managed to survive the horrific accident and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The authorities have detained the truck driver and his helper in connection with the tragic incident. District magistrate MP Singh explained that the truck had overturned due to an excess of sand, leading to the fatal outcome for those inside the hut adjacent to the road.
