BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the tragic death of a 13-year-old boy that occurred on Saturday, March 2, 2024. The autopsy results have confirmed that his death was a result of homicide, as stated by BPD Sgt. LaQuitta Wade.
Wade disclosed that on the morning of March 2, at approximately 7:20 a.m., Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a distress call at the Extended Stay America motel located at 101 Cahaba Park Circle.
Upon arrival at the Inverness area motel, BFR personnel rushed Aston Starkey, a 13-year-old resident of Birmingham, to Grandview Hospital, where he was tragically pronounced deceased by hospital staff.
“South Precinct officers, along with BPD Homicide detectives, immediately responded to Grandview Hospital and initiated an investigation into the unexplained death,” Wade explained. “Additionally, Shelby County DHR launched their own independent investigation.”
Following the initial inquiry, it was determined that Starkey’s demise was surrounded by suspicious circumstances, according to Wade.
“On Thursday, June 6, 2024, Shelby County DHR notified our Homicide Unit that Aston’s autopsy results indicated that he succumbed to malnutrition and dehydration exacerbated by neglect,” Wade detailed. “Consequently, the medical examiner’s office classified the manner of death as homicide.”
The subsequent day, detectives secured an arrest warrant for the child’s mother in connection to the case.
“On Friday, June 7, 2024, the homicide detectives presented the case details to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office,” Wade mentioned. “Upon reviewing the evidence, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant for murder against the victim’s mother.”
The suspect has been identified as Serena Starkey, aged 43, from Birmingham. Presently, the suspect remains at large.
