Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a recent development, the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry in Jakarta has underscored the critical role of digital literacy in safeguarding women and children from online sexual exploitation.

Ratna Susianawati, a spokesperson for the ministry, addressed the issue following the circulation of a disturbing video depicting the sexual abuse of a 5-year-old child in South Tangerang, Banten. The video was initially shared on Facebook by the account “Icha Shakila.”

The perpetrator, a 21-year-old mother known as R, is currently under investigation for her involvement in the video. Reports indicate that R was enticed into creating the video by the individual operating the Facebook account, who promised her Rp 15 million (US$920.3) in exchange.

“This case serves as a stark reminder of the significance of digital literacy and the need to educate the public on the appropriate and responsible use of the internet, particularly on social media platforms,” remarked Ratna during a statement on Tuesday (June 11), as cited by the Antara news agency.

Emphasising that promoting education and awareness about the safe and ethical use of social media is not solely the government’s responsibility, Ratna stressed that it is also incumbent upon the public and other stakeholders to play their part.

Meanwhile, in Bekasi, a similar distressing incident unfolded involving a 26-year-old mother named AK. The victim in this case was AK’s 9-year-old child, and the video was once again disseminated through the “Icha Shakila” Facebook account.

AK has been taken into custody by the authorities. She disclosed that despite sending the video, the individual behind the Facebook account did not fulfil their promise of sending her money.

Ratna has urged the police to intensify efforts in tracking down the perpetrator responsible for the “Icha Shakila” Facebook account. Investigations have revealed that the account distributing the videos of sexual abuse was a counterfeit version of another legitimate account.

Law enforcement officials disclosed that the true owner of the Facebook account, identified as S, had fallen victim to hacking and impersonation on the platform. – The Jakarta Post/ANN
