Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The wreckage of a single-engine plane that crashed in Johnson County last month, claiming the life of the student pilot onboard, showed no signs of a pre-impact malfunction or mechanical failure, according to a preliminary report by federal investigators.

On the evening of May 15, emergency responders were called to the scene of a fiery plane crash near the 8600 block of West FM 4, a rural road south of Godley. The pilot, identified as 19-year-old Jon Diego Monreal from Crowley, tragically lost his life in the accident. Godley is located approximately 60 miles southwest of downtown Dallas.

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently conducting an investigation into the crash. The preliminary report, released on May 31, details that Monreal’s Cessna 150L took off from Cleburne Regional Airport at 7:48 p.m.

Within an hour of takeoff, the plane flew over Lake Pat Cleburne, heading south before changing direction to travel northwest, passing by Pecan Plantation in Hood County. The aircraft then turned back towards the Cleburne airport. Flight data indicates that the plane slowed down to 13 knots (approximately 14 mph) before entering a sudden descent, as reported in the 8-page document.

A witness, driving with his daughter near the crash site, observed the plane flying at a slow speed, almost hovering, before spiralling into a nosedive. The witness immediately contacted emergency services upon seeing smoke and flames at the scene.

An initial assessment by an on-site Federal Aviation Administration investigator suggested the possibility that the plane ran out of fuel, as per a Department of Public Safety news release on May 16 and statements from Sgt. William Lockridge, a DPS spokesperson.

The preliminary NTSB report, while subject to revision as the investigation progresses, does not definitively state that the plane ran out of fuel. NTSB investigations typically span 12 to 24 months, according to a spokesperson from the safety board.

An obituary for Monreal reveals that the recent graduate of Crowley High School began his pilot training in the autumn of last year and completed his first solo flight in December.

Describing Monreal’s passion for aviation, the obituary states, “Diego had a deep love for the sky and its beauty. He often took pictures of the sky to capture the moment, sometimes asking his mom to pull the car over so he could snap the perfect shot. He always spoke about how beautiful it was to fly and see the world from a different perspective.”

In 2023, the National Transportation Safety Board investigated 103 reported aviation accidents in Texas, primarily involving general aviation. Texas consistently ranks among the top three states for aviation incidents, alongside California and Florida, as highlighted by a former director of the safety board’s investigations division in a previous interview with The Dallas Morning News.
