SHELL LAKE (WQOW) – A heartbreaking incident unfolded at Shell Lake on Wednesday, resulting in the tragic drowning of a 19-year-old individual, authorities have confirmed.
According to a press release issued by the Shell Lake Police Chief, emergency responders were summoned to the lake at 4:43 p.m. following a distressing report of a potential drowning. Witnesses on the scene made valiant efforts to rescue the victim, identified as Hunter L. Oneal, and promptly sought assistance.
Initial findings from the investigation revealed that Oneal had been enjoying a day out at the beach with friends when he ventured into the water for a swim. Tragically, he succumbed to fatigue and distress, ultimately disappearing beneath the water’s surface, as per officials.
Chief Michael Jaszczak’s press release stated, “According to witnesses, he became fatigued and distressed and suddenly went under the water.”
Despite the prompt deployment of the Shell Lake Fire Department’s rescue boat to locate Oneal, efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful, and he was declared deceased at the scene.
In a touching statement, Jaszczak expressed his condolences to the friends and family of the deceased, remarking, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this incident.”
Jaszczak also extended his gratitude to the emergency responders and members of the public who offered their personal boat to aid in the search efforts.
