The ring, which was discovered in a field near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, by 85-year-old metal detectorist Tom Clark, has a fascinating history dating back to the 18th century.
The ring was identified as belonging to George Grenville, who served as British Prime Minister from 1763 to 1765. Mr. Clark, the metal detectorist who made the remarkable discovery, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the sale, jokingly stating, “I didn’t watch the sale as I was out metal-detecting. I would like to put the money in my bank account, but I am sure that my wife will have ideas of how to spend it!”
Nigel Mills, an artefact and coin expert at Noonans, provided valuable insights into the ring’s history, shedding light on its connection to the Grenville family. Half of the proceeds from the sale will be given to the land owner as a token of appreciation for allowing Mr. Clark to search the area with his metal detector.
