Accident – Death – Obituary News : A historic gold signet ring that once belonged to a former British Prime Minister has been sold at auction for a staggering £9,500 after being unearthed in a field in Buckinghamshire.

The discovery was made by 85-year-old metal detectorist Tom Clark, who stumbled upon the precious ring in a pasture for sheep near Aylesbury. Little did he know at the time that he had found a piece of history linked to George Grenville, who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1763 to 1765.

The ring, which bears the insignia of Grenville’s family crest, was later authenticated and confirmed to have belonged to the 18th-century statesman. It was sold at an auction held by Noonans Mayfair, with the winning bid coming from a buyer based in the United States.

Reflecting on the unexpected windfall, Mr. Clark expressed his delight at the outcome but humorously confessed, “I didn’t watch the sale as I was out metal-detecting. I would like to put the money in my bank account, but I am sure that my wife will have ideas of how to spend it!”

George Grenville, who faced controversy during his tenure as Prime Minister due to protests in the American colonies over his policies, passed down the ring to his second son, also named George. This information was shared by Nigel Mills, an expert in artefacts and coins at Noonans.

Interestingly, the younger George Grenville went on to become Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and was bestowed with the title of Marquess of Buckingham. He resided near the area where the ring was discovered, adding an intriguing local connection to the find.

In a generous gesture, half of the proceeds from the sale will be given to the landowner where the ring was found, highlighting the spirit of collaboration and appreciation for historical artefacts.
