Edward Pottmyer : “Virginia man arrested for decades-old sexual assaults”

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. – A man from Loudoun County has been apprehended and formally charged in connection to a series of sexual assaults spanning several decades.

Authorities have revealed that Edward Eugene Pottmyer, a 58-year-old resident of Chantilly, is suspected to be involved in a string of criminal acts dating back to 1998.

Pottmyer was arrested on June 5 and has been accused of forcible sodomy and abduction with the intent to defile after investigators successfully linked his DNA to three assaults that occurred many years ago.

The initial assault took place at approximately 7 p.m. on September 9, 1998. According to reports, a 48-year-old woman was jogging along a bike path in the Fair Lakes area when Pottmyer allegedly threatened her with a knife, sexually assaulted her, and then fled the scene.

Subsequently, around 11 p.m. on August 3, 2000, an individual forcibly entered a residence in the 11900 block of Parkside Drive in Fairfax.

The victim, aged 66, was asleep when she woke up to find the suspect, believed to be Pottmyer, assaulting her. She managed to fight him off and escape by jumping from a second-floor balcony.

On December 6, 2004, at approximately 10:45 p.m., a 51-year-old woman in the 9900 block of Whitewater Drive in Burke witnessed a man exposing himself outside her sliding glass door. The victim shouted, prompting the man to flee.

In each of these incidents, detectives collected forensic evidence from the scenes and submitted it for analysis.

Fairfax County law enforcement officials disclosed that they sent the DNA samples to Othram Inc. and utilized their advanced DNA technology to develop a comprehensive profile, which was then employed for genetic genealogy research.

Following this, they acquired Pottmyer’s DNA, which definitively identified him as the perpetrator.

With the issuance of warrants and assistance from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Pottmyer was apprehended and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he is presently detained without bail.

Investigators are urging anyone with additional information regarding these cases or who may have had unlawful interactions with Pottmyer to come forward.
