BALTIMORE — Baltimore Police have made public the body camera footage of a tragic encounter that took place last month in South Baltimore’s Fairfield Area. The incident resulted in the death of a man and a police officer being wounded.

The video, which viewers should be advised is graphic and contains profanity, shows a group of officers approaching the man, identified as 39-year-old Anthony Ferguson. The confrontation occurred on May 24, after police received information that Ferguson, who had discharged a gun during an incident four days prior, was at work and on a break when officers approached him at approximately 10:25 p.m.

During the encounter, Ferguson pulled a handgun from his waistband and engaged in gunfire with the officers. Detective Nicholas Wellems sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the exchange, while Ferguson succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Body Camera Footage Reveals the Events

The Baltimore Police Department, in collaboration with the Maryland attorney general’s office’s Independent Investigations Division, is conducting an investigation into the shooting that took place on the 3400 block of South Hanover Street. The police department released the footage to the media following a news conference held on Wednesday.

The five officers involved, including Wellems, Brandall Mable, Nicolas Sturla, Kevin Retamale, and Sgt. Timothy Copeland, have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

One of the officers can be heard in the video asking Ferguson about the gun, prompting a tense exchange that ultimately led to the fatal confrontation.

Officers Respond to Threat

The footage from Wellems’ body camera provides a detailed view of the events leading up to the gunfire. The officers responded with a total of 39 rounds, while Ferguson reportedly fired three shots from a handgun equipped with an extended magazine.

Wellems, who was fortunate to be wearing a bulletproof vest, was quickly treated for his injuries and is currently in recovery. Police officials emphasised the life-saving role played by the vest in preventing a more serious outcome.

Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated, “The gunshot that struck him hit him in his vest … If his vest isn’t there, it goes into his heart, it probably kills him.”
