Kentucky State Police (KSP) from the Hazard Post are currently conducting an investigation into the tragic death of a woman in Letcher County, believed to have been caused by animals.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 9, close to 1:00 a.m. when emergency services received a distressing 911 call reporting the discovery of a deceased woman on Doty Creek in the Jeremiah region of Letcher County.

Upon arrival at the scene, troopers and detectives identified the victim as Trina Sandlin, a 57-year-old resident of Jerimiah. Initial findings suggest that she had left her residence earlier that evening to visit a neighbour but failed to return. Family members found Sandlin near her home, down an embankment, with injuries consistent with an animal attack.

Although the specific animal responsible has not been disclosed by KSP, Letcher County Coroner Perry Fowler informed the Lexington Herald-Leader that Sandlin was attacked by canines, although it remains uncertain whether they were dogs or coyotes.

Sadly, Sandlin was pronounced dead at the scene by the Letcher County Coroner’s Office and her body has been transferred to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for further examination. The results of the autopsy have not yet been released by KSP.

The investigation into Sandlin’s death is being led by State Police Detective Brandon Thomas and remains ongoing.
