DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Steven L. Hirstein, the man who was shot by police during a domestic dispute in Decatur, has pleaded guilty to armed violence, a class X felony.
Hirstein was initially facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery, armed violence, and domestic battery. However, as part of a plea deal, all charges except armed violence were dropped.
Following his guilty plea, Hirstein has been sentenced to 14 years in prison, to be followed by 18 months of probation. The sentence takes into account the time he has already served since the incident on March 30, 2023.
The incident unfolded on March 30, 2023, when Decatur Police Department (DPD) officers responded to a distress call reporting a minor being threatened with a knife. The individual causing the disturbance was identified as Steven L. Hirstein.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officers encountered a 34-year-old woman, who was the mother of the child, with non-life-threatening stab and slash wounds. Hirstein had barricaded himself in a bathroom within the residence.
DPD officers attempted to negotiate with Hirstein to surrender peacefully. However, a confrontation ensued, leading to two officers discharging their firearms and striking the suspect. Body camera footage captured the moment Hirstein emerged from the bathroom holding two knives, one of which he threw before being shot in the hands and arm.
After receiving initial medical treatment at the scene, Hirstein was transported to the hospital for further care. Following his release from medical care, he was taken into custody and booked at Macon County Jail.
One month after the incident, Macon County State’s Attorney Scott Rueter reviewed the case and determined that the use of force by the officers was justified under state laws. Rueter described the officers’ actions as a necessary response to Hirstein’s threatening behaviour.
