In a shocking turn of events, a Newark woman has been charged with driving with a suspended license in connection with a hit-and-run incident in Hudson County that left a 76-year-old man seriously injured, according to prosecutors.

Sonia Salazar, aged 63, is facing charges of knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim, and causing serious injury while driving on a revoked/suspended license, as stated by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

The arrest of Salazar took place at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Thursday, June 6. She was subsequently released pending her first court appearance, prosecutors confirmed.

According to prosecutors, the unfortunate incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. on May 30, 2024, when the Kearny Police Department received a report of a pedestrian struck at the intersection of Kearny Avenue and Columbia Avenue. Upon arrival, law enforcement found a 76-year-old Kearny resident with serious injuries. The victim was swiftly transported by Emergency Medical Services to University Hospital in Newark for urgent medical attention.

Salazar is scheduled to make her first court appearance on Thursday, June 20, as per prosecutors.
