A 25-year-old individual from St. Paul, Sherrod Lamar Jr., has been handed a three-year sentence for his participation in a cellphone theft ring that operated in Minneapolis. Court records indicate that Lamar Jr. has already served 319 days in custody, and he has agreed to pay restitution for the current case and other related cases that were dismissed as part of a plea bargain. The specific amount of restitution has not been disclosed.

Twelve individuals, including Lamar Jr., were charged in connection with the theft ring, which prosecutors claim was active from June 2021 to May 2022. Apart from stealing phones from more than 40 victims, the group was also involved in transferring money from the victims’ phones to members of the theft ring.

The suspects primarily targeted individuals leaving bars, occasionally resorting to using force to steal phones. Subsequently, the stolen devices were reportedly funneled to a man known as Zhongshuang Su, commonly referred to as “the iPhone Man,” who would then proceed to sell the phones.

Law enforcement officials allege that over four dozen phones were shipped to Hong Kong, with an additional two dozen devices sent to Su’s employer. The collective value of the thefts is estimated to exceed $300,000.
