Authorities in Jones County, Mississippi have positively identified the body of a woman discovered in the trunk of a vehicle on Monday. The victim has been named as 32-year-old Samantha Elisabeth McCowan, a resident of Laurel.
Following an autopsy conducted by the Mississippi Forensic Laboratory, the Jones County Sheriff’s Department has stated that there is no evidence of foul play in McCowan’s death. Security camera footage obtained during the investigation also showed no signs of criminal activity.
McCowan’s body was found in the trunk of a vehicle at Louis Auto Sales, a local used car lot near the intersection of MS-184 and Victory Road. Sheriff Joe Berlin had previously indicated that the body might be connected to McCowan, who had been reported missing in the area.
McCowan was reported missing after she walked away from a vehicle accident that occurred in the early hours of Friday, June 7. She was last seen near the intersection of Mississippi Highway 184 and U.S. Highway 84. The crash took place on Victory Road, according to the sheriff’s department.
In the days between McCowan’s disappearance and the discovery of her body, the JCSD, along with assistance from other agencies, conducted extensive ground and drone searches throughout Jones County.
McCowan’s obituary has been published on the website of Freeman Funeral Home Waynesboro Chapel. The sheriff’s department has expressed gratitude to all emergency services and agencies involved in the investigation.
