Authorities in Fayette, Texas reported that two men were arrested on felony charges following a traffic stop in Bastrop County in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to reports, Sgt. Ryan Meagher conducted a traffic stop on a 2004 Ford F-150 at around 12:49 a.m. on June 11, 2024, in the Kirtley area. During the stop, Meagher noticed a pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine in plain sight. He then requested the passenger to exit the vehicle, but when the passenger refused, Meagher had to assist him out of the vehicle.

Upon searching the vehicle, Meagher discovered a loaded AR-15 style rifle. Both the driver and passenger were identified as convicted felons, making them prohibited from possessing firearms. Additionally, methamphetamine was found concealed in the passenger’s underwear.

The driver, identified as 61-year-old Randolph Simon from Smithville, Texas, was taken into custody and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.

The passenger, identified as 56-year-old Melvin Johnson also from Smithville, Texas, faced multiple charges including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 >=4G<400G, Tampering/Fabricating Physical Evidence with Intent to Impair, Interference with Public Duties, and Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 (Bastrop County Warrant).
