THUNDER BAY — A passenger on a Porter Airlines flight to Thunder Bay may be facing penalties for violating the ban on smoking on airplanes.
The incident took place on a June 6 flight from Toronto to Thunder Bay, where a crew member discovered a cigarette in the aircraft’s lavatory.
Porter Airlines spokesperson released a statement on Tuesday confirming that a passenger was identified as the suspected smoker, and the crew promptly notified security upon landing in Thunder Bay.
The airline reassured that the plane landed safely without any further issues, ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew on board.
While specific details were not disclosed by the airline, an unconfirmed report suggested that a smoke detector had been activated, leading to the identification of the individual responsible. Other passengers were reportedly held onboard as the man was escorted off the plane.
Under federal law, smoking or vaping on an aircraft is strictly prohibited and can result in fines of up to $5,000. In addition to financial penalties, a conviction could also result in the individual receiving a criminal record.
