Columbus, Ohio – The Columbus Division of Police released footage on Wednesday capturing the moment when five officers fatally shot a man who was charging at them with a make-shift knife. The incident took place late Monday night on the city’s southwest side. Police Chief Elaine Bryant reported that 911 calls alerted authorities to a man, later identified as 35-year-old Noel Hernandez, who was banging on vehicles and threatening people with a knife in the area of Georgesville and Clime roads.

Upon arrival at the scene just before 11:30 p.m., officers encountered Hernandez with his vehicle stopped in the middle of the road. Despite repeated instructions in English and Spanish to show his hands, Hernandez got into his car and drove away, leading officers on a pursuit down Georgesville Road. After turning onto Sullivant Avenue, Hernandez exited his vehicle and was again instructed, in both languages, to display his hands and drop the weapon. Dashcam footage suggests that Hernandez proceeded to bang on either the roof or the hood of his car before briefly advancing towards officers and subsequently retreating into his vehicle.

On two more occasions, Hernandez repeated this pattern of getting in and out of his vehicle. At the intersection of Sullivant Avenue and Industrial Mile Road, Hernandez finally exited his vehicle for the third time. Despite officers’ commands to show his hands and get on the ground, Hernandez began walking away. In an attempt to subdue him, one of the officers deployed a Taser at Hernandez twice, but to no avail. Body-worn camera recordings captured Hernandez turning around, raising his arms, and approaching the officers, who repeatedly instructed him to stop. Ignoring their commands, Hernandez ran towards the officers with the weapon in hand, prompting five officers to open fire.

Following the shooting, officers provided medical assistance to Hernandez until paramedics transported him to Doctors Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The five officers involved have been placed on administrative assignment and are scheduled for psychological evaluations. Chief Bryant maintains that the officers acted in accordance with departmental policies.

Describing the weapon wielded by Hernandez as a “make-shift knife or a piece of metal” with two hooks, Bryant revealed that earlier in the day, a neighbor had requested a well-being check on Hernandez. Responding officers, who were not the same individuals involved in the shooting, interacted with Hernandez and the neighbor, finding no signs of imminent danger. Hernandez, claiming to be tired, denied the officers entry into his home.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has taken over the probe into this tragic incident.
