Armed Man Charged with Murder After Fatally Shooting Teenager in Suburban Seattle

(CNN) — Aaron Brown Myers, a 51-year-old armed man, has been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree assault in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old teenager in suburban Seattle. The incident occurred outside a sporting goods store in Renton, Washington, where Myers took it upon himself to conduct surveillance.

The victim, identified as H.R., was shot once in the side and at least six times in the back, resulting in his death at the scene. According to court documents, Myers escalated the situation with violence, ultimately taking the teenager’s life.

Myers, described as a professional security consultant by his attorneys, claimed he acted in self-defense. His legal team stated that Myers only intended to protect himself and others from harm.

Details of the Incident

The altercation began on the evening of June 5 when H.R. and two other teenagers approached the Big 5 Sporting Goods store. H.R. had an airsoft gun in his pocket, while his friend, identified as B.A., had a similar gun in his coat pocket.

Myers, not a law enforcement member, decided to conduct overwatch in the parking lot and mistakenly assumed the teenagers were planning a violent robbery. He confronted them with his pistol, ordering them to drop their guns and get on the ground.

While B.A. complied and put down his airsoft gun, H.R. attempted to back away with his hands in the air. Myers then tackled B.A. and shot at H.R. multiple times, resulting in the teenager’s death.

Surveillance Video Evidence

Parts of the incident were captured on surveillance video from the Big 5 store and a nearby martial arts business. The footage showed Myers approaching the teenagers with his pistol, leading to the fatal shooting of H.R.

According to the video, the teenagers repeatedly informed Myers that their guns were only BB guns. Despite their protests, Myers continued to escalate the situation, leading to the tragic outcome.

Legal Proceedings and Prior Incidents

Myers was arrested at the scene and is currently held on $2 million bail at the King County Correctional Facility. His arraignment is scheduled for June 24.

Prosecutors highlighted a prior incident involving Myers in March 2022, where he intervened in a situation he believed to involve an armed individual. This incident, along with the fatal shooting of H.R., raises concerns about Myers’ approach to public interactions.

The prosecution argued that only stringent measures, such as high bail and surrender of firearms, can protect the community from individuals like Myers who take it upon themselves to intervene with lethal force.
